SYNOPSIS

Charlie (Jesse Pepe), a wide-eyed dreamer/writer, comes into town and falls deeply for LA and all of its cliches. In turn, he falls for Laura (Fernanda Vazquez), a girl who lives up to all his romantic ideals. But when his dreams don't match up to reality, is his romantic spirit enough to save a crumbling relationship? "City by the Sea" is a love song for the city of Los Angeles, a story for all those who dream and experience heartbreak in this wild and enchanting dichotomy of a city.

"City by the Sea" is a project that has evolved over ten years, through writer/director Mu Sun's life experiences in Los Angeles in his 20s. Originally created as a student film at USC in 2005 in his junior year, it has gone through dozens of iterations that have gradually been more and more influenced by his failures and successes as he's navigated trying to become a filmmaker in Los Angeles. Charlie is a character who has been blissfully ignorant of his idealistic naivety, slowly coming to terms with a reality where his dreams may never fully be realized - a personal crisis of identity that is perhaps universally understood. The film explores what happens when you're forced to face that moment, amidst the backdrop of a city that pleads you to keep dreaming.
